Open Question: how to portray emotion in painting/art?
for my art gcse the main theme is identity, and the sub theme i have chosen out of the three options i was given is 'reflection and distortion'. i have chosen to focus on the distortion of peoples identities and the way we see them, and in particular i am focusing on Jesus. I am interested in how he is nearly always portrayed as the strong, powerful son of god, but i would like my work to show his more human side, and the side of him that may have felt anger, sadness, bitterness, doubt and confusion. The quote which i found to inspire me was one from an interview with ted neeley, who played jesus in the 1973 jesus christ superstar film. he said the film portrayed jesus as, ''a jesus tormented by doubt, anger and passion - fully human.''
for my final piece, i would like some ideas from you about how to portray this side of jesus - i thought i would photograph my friend, who has the appearance of the 'traditional' jesus (long hair, etc) to contrast with the human side of him which i would like my final piece to show.
I have thought of using red to show anger, but would like some original ideas for composition, eg how should i get my friend to pose, and what facial expressions etc?
the techniques i will most likely be using are oil paint with sewing over the top, and possibly application of gold leaf (for a halo like glow?)
what artists could i look at who paint quite realistically but show lots of raw emotion in their work? i will probabably look at van gogh among other artists.
