The building was an early design - 1820s - by Charles Barry, who later won larger fame for his work on the Houses of Parliament in London. It was erected for the Royal Manchester Institution, a body promoting art, literature and science. The building and an art collection was conveyed to the City Council later in the 19th century. Since then it has been the City Art Gallery.
