Open Question: Bikes: How to ride them?

So, biking. I'm 13 and i still haven't learned to ride a bike. i live in a suburb that has about one or two straightaways, no hills, except for the one that is in my backyard that reaches into the farm behind us. I really want to learn how to ride a bike, my mother, father, aunt, uncle, and other relatives are all pushing me to learn how to ride a bike. My father said: "What if you can't drive to a place and you need to get there? You'd take a bike!". (Not if you have a fucking skateboard, you don't..) I'm pretty sure i'd far rather prefer riding a skateboard or walking, but you know what are you gonna do. I believe i have to potential to ride a bike, but to be honest for me it seems like such a hassle, as in when i could just use a board or such. Balancing, is the one thing i kind of do not understand. They say shift your weight into your hips/bottom, but seriously, i just do not get it. I've never been a sporty guy, more into the whole gaming/technological/digital design and art stuff, sports are the one thing i never considered doing. So, if you can picture my area, tell me; how to ride a bike.
