Open Question: Help Me Name This Kid's Book? I read it in the mid 90s; Parents especially helpful!?
Ok, I know this is the wrong section to post this, but I'm hoping to attract some parents that may have read this book to their own kids!
So I'm trying to think of this book that I used to love when I was a kid (born in 94 - yep, I'm still just a kid haha).
I'm pretty hazy on the details, so if you can name it for me my gratitude and 10 points are yours no questions asked.
First of all, the art in the book is really cool. It's abstract, and from what I can remember uses a lot of shadows and darkness to contrast several vibrantly colored objects interspersed in the blackness. Even though I last read it over a decade ago I remember it has really bizarre, dream-like illustrations.
Also, I'm pretty sure it has no words, just pictures. If it does have descriptions, they're only at the beginning and end. The author lets the illustrations tell the story.
It starts out with this boy who notices from his window that he has a mysterious new neighbor. The neighbor is wrapped in a big coat and pulled down fedora. Only one side of him is illuminated by the dim glow of the streetlamp, the other half cast in shadows. Naturally, the boy is obviously curious.
I blank on what comes next, but more or less the neighbor silently walks into his new house and the boy decides to investigate.
Pressed up against the neighbor's window (I think, he might be inside) the boy sees a ring-stand like you would see in a circus. He then sees several shapes pop out of the darkness: a bright red nose, a blue elephant, various brightly colored shapes, etc. this all is drawn very uniquely; it almost looks painted.
Finally, the neighbor is finally revealed to be a circus clown under his trench coat and pulled down hat, tying together all of the mysterious glimpses the boy had seen previously.
Aaand that's about all I got for you. Moms, dads, kids-at-heart, your help is greatly appreciated!

A second thought about Salvador Dali
A new book about Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel gives rise to an unintended second thought about Salvador Dali - that he was less a lovable kook and more a cold-hearted one.
