Open Question: is this accurate about family life in the 1800s as well can you add?

In the 1800s funerals took place at home rather than a funeral home. The deceased body would lay in a coffin in the parlor of the house. News would spread through town that someone had died and the public, neighbours, family and friends would drop by the house and offer their condolences and sometimes bring a meal for the family.

In the 19th century different houses were furnished differently. Based on their wealth and the decade. The furniture belonging to the wealthy included gothic styles, neoclassical, regency, antique and Victorian. But the furniture of the poorer was some times non existent. Some couldn’t afford beds and had to sleep on hay or dirt. Houses were also inspired by Victorian and gothic styles. The wealthy families could live in houses that took up a large portion of land, had a kitchen, dining room, parlor, 1-2 bedrooms on the first floor and multiple upstairs for each child, a library, school room, play room, and a sleeping chamber for servants. While middle or poor families lived in houses with few rooms and as many as 5 children would have to share a room. Other homes included frontier homes with dirt floors. Those who worked and lived on the farms would live there. In the early 1800s having a brick house was a luxury.

In the 1800s most women were not fortunate enough to buy a wedding dress. Instead, they wore their best dress. Usually decorated with lace, but the dress was very often any colour but white. They women accented with flowers in their hair while the men wore a formal suit and a white tie. Most couples got married in the brides house. Their wedding was a private event and only close family and friends were invited to attend. The weddings usually occurred in the early spring or around thanksgiving. This way the wedding would not interrupt the growing season and most family gathered around near thanksgiving time. Brides rarely received presents and rarely wore white. Those who could afford a wedding outfit would opt for a brown colour or light sliver grey colour. Men would wear their finest tailcoat, vest, tie, shirt and pants. A common exchange of rings that we see now a days did not occur in the 1800s frequently. Sometimes if the man could afford a ring he would purchase a gold band to signify their engagement and that would be the weding ring aswell. Men and women both had their own choice of who they were going to marry. Their parents didn’t set up or arrange their marriage. Although men would commonly wait to get married until they had enough money and were well secured for their future.

The food in the 1800s for the working class consited of mainly potatoes, bacon, bread and butter. For the well off they had options of butchers meat. Different sweets were inveted as well. Such as the chocolate bar in 1847. canned food also became available close to the 1880s.

In the 19th century Christmas became what it is today, the Christmas card, the nutcracker and santa claus as well as the Christmas tree were all evolving in the 1800s.

Roles:
Women were the primary role for raising the children. The men were the bread winners, although even though the women weren’t commonly working, some women would sell lunches, pastries and take in borders to get money to help out. Teenage sisters would work in factories, teach in elementary schools or sew in order to help support their brothers through school. Women were supposed to devoted themselved to being a mother and doing the chores, cleaning and cooking while the men brought home the money.

Wealthy women took up the arts such as music playing, painting, singing , dancing, and sewing.

Families had more children in the 19th century because they knew the mortality rate was high and not all kids would make it.
