Hotel Esperance Tv Brussels Art-deco
| Views: 0 0 ratings | |

Open Question: Which of these statements is true about the origins of Hapkido?
Hapkido is of Korean origin with mainly Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu added to it.
"Originally an ancient Silla martial art but later named Hapkido by Choi Yong Sul who returned from Japan after World War II and started teaching a martial art he claimed to have learned from Sokaku Takeda. He called his style Yawara, but it was later renamed to Hapki Yusul and again renamed to Hapkido."
or
Hapkido is mainly Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu (therefore Japanese and Korean) in origin.
"The art copied from Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu (大東流合気柔術) or a closely related jujutsu system taught by Choi Yong-Sool (Hangul: 최용술) who returned to Korea after World War II, having lived in Japan for 30 years. This system was later combined with kicking and striking techniques of indigenous and contemporary arts such as taekkyeon and tang soo do."
Both of these statements come from Wikipedia. One says that Hapkido is an ancient Korean martial art with the Japanese martial art Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu added to it. And the other says that Hapkido comes from the founders training in Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu whilst living in Japan and has had Judo and Korean martial arts added later.
I am starting to think that Hapkido is Japanese and Korean in origin and not just Korean. And Wikipedia gets this bit right-
"Its history is obscured by the historical animosity between the Korean and Japanese people following the Second World War."
