Open Question: Going To Europe For 3 Months, Want Help With Itinerary/Possibly Culling Destinations?
A friend and I are going to Europe for 3 months and a bit (102 Days), we're both Australian citizens, and will be 19 when we go (March 25th onwards 2013). The Itinerary so far is... Cadiz, Granada, Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona, Toulouse, Marseilles, Monte Carlo, Loire Valley, Le Mont Saint Michel, Versailles/Fontainebleau, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee, Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Milan, Cinque Terre, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Olympia/Sparta, Delphi, Athens, Santorini, and Chania.
So 34 places, and with the time limits, we end up with 3 days each destination on AVERAGE, but obviously we'll give and take time with certain places, i.e. take a few days off Mont Saint Michel and spend them in Paris (you get the idea).
We've been investigating a 3 month EURail pass, between Spain and Italy, then boating/flying over to Greece for the remainder on normal public transport. And was wondering if this would be the most cost efficient/convenient/comfortable way to travel.
Everything will be Standard/2nd Class/Regular Accommodation/Transport, hoping to stay in low-cost B&B's, hotels/motels and hostels for as much of the trip as possible.
Our main goals for the trip are to see really beautiful, cultural and historic sites, and we're mostly interested in museums, churches/cathedrals, art galleries (all kinds, but obviously the particularly famous ones first), eating local food, looking at the gorgeous buildings/architecture, seeing heaps of the famous local sights, and finally having a good look at a lot of ruins (ancient ones in particular).
So please give feedback (all kinds, but try to keep it constructive/informative), and to possibly offer ideas for refining my itinerary. This trip will be "Europe" Part 1 of 3, so for now I'm focussing solely on the countries we're visiting (Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Greece) though Denmark can possibly be negotiated off the list and moved to a different trip.
So, yeah, just want to hear some feedback on the destination choices, the timeline constraints, if any places are actually worth a miss, and hopefully for the more seasoned travellers, some comments on the estimated cost, and also any ideas on the extension of the Schengen Visitation Policy (90 days) or acquiring a visa/any other solutions to stay the full 102 days.
PS: Sorry about the paragraph explosion; I wanted to provide all the info upfront so you didn't have to ask me for other details.
