Open Question: Elder Ojibwe beadworker looking for other natives to share beadwork. How to find them?
mid 60's, disabled widow here in Flint area, Michigan. Have all my supplies and many already made beadwork pieces. Taught Native American Beadwork in classes for many years. Used to do pow wows and involved with local Indian Center now closed.
Moved and have no one to do beadwork with. How can I find beadwork companions again? Prefer other natives but no reserve near here and we dont come out of the woodwork often to be visible as natives in our communities. Any ideas? Scared of craigslist cause there are so many weirdos. Many people want me to do other types of beadwork with big beads, etc. Not interested in that.
Am also willing to do Native beadwork with people who are not Native or even teach the art to others. However, it would have to be in my home. I prefer people who are at least middle age, however, because learning Native Beadwork takes patience. It is not something that you just drop over for an hour and know how to do everything. Younger people I have tried to teach just havent had the patience to learn and realize it truly is an art, and I also taught some Native culture in my classes and made some simple Native food for lunch. It was fun and I miss it very much. I am no longer able to put all that together. It would take a lot of support for me to do that. By the way, there are Christian Natives and I am one. I do appreciate my heritage and respect Native culture, but I do not follow native religion.
ty for your ideas. Interested in seeing other natives beadwork and showing mine too. Ideas about how to get my beadwork out there to the public also appreciated. Keep in mind, I am disabled and cant go out and do "shows". I sure hope that our art of Native Beadwork does not become extinct. Especially, Michigan Native beadworkers, where are you?
