Tate Modern Art Gallery London
LondonCamera posted a photo:
The Tate Modern art gallery on London's South Bank, overlooking the River Thames. As the name suggests, it displays modern art works, whilst Tate Britain further up the river is home to more traditional art.
The building is a former mid-20th century power station designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, hence its distinctive chimney. Scott also designed London's iconic red telephone boxes and another famous riverside coal-burning power station in Battersea. The obvious reason for power stations being built along the Thames was to allow barges to deliver coal in bulk.
Bankside power station closed in 1981 and, after extensive redevelopment which added a couple of floors, the building eventually became home to the Tate Modern in 2000 following the opening of the Millennium Bridge, an important an busy connection between the Tate Modern and St Paul's Cathedral on the north side of the Thames.
The gallery has proved to be exceptionally popular, and remains so more than a decade on for nearly five million people visiting per year.
It can be difficult to get a bright photo of the Tate Modern, as the sun always travels across the sky behind the South Bank, leaving its buildings in shadow. Luckily, there were some fluffy white clouds over London on this day, bouncing some sunlight back onto the front of the building.
